2011 Highland Maple Festival ... Walk of Honor to thank U.S. veterans

In the center of Monterey, the county seat for Highland County, is the Walk of Honor dedicated to U.S. military veterans from Highland. Located beside the Courthouse, it is a sobering reminder that Freedom Is Not Free. Even a county as remote as Highland with the small population of approximately 2,600 people has seen those men and women who were called to military service to protect the freedoms we enjoy. Our eternal thanks to them all for their service to America.
"Dedicated to all veterans past, present and future. We main free because of your sacrifice."
The Walk of Honor is a beautiful tribute in this small town.
All military branches are represented with plaques and flags.
Al Woodson was the Republican Chairman of Highland in the early 2000s so we worked together between Augusta and Highland for our candidates. I had no idea he was a military veteran until I found his brick while searching for familiar names Saturday on the Walk of Honor. My husband and I had the privilege of visiting Al and his wonderful wife at their home north of Monterey while he was chairman.

Tim Duff, owner of Duff's Sugar House at Fair Lawn Farm in southern Highland County, served 20 years in the Coast Guard before retiring in 1999.

"To those who have fought for it,
freedom has a flavor the protected will never know."
